Crazy Love
Oh, grasshopper, I might as well say it now so I don’t have to say it later: it’s not your heart that’s suffering, it’s your ego. Your heart can only love; and by “heart” I mean your truest self, that state of being that is nothing but all things arising, subsiding, arising, subsiding. And by “love” I don’t mean giving, or something passive like letting things be; I mean something more like cultivating an awareness that all that happens is a deepening of all that happens. Love loving. Ego is resistance to that process, which causes suffering. Ego thrashes around like its drowning. It makes a spectacle of itself, until it realizes it’s impossible to drown in love. When the one you love doesn’t love you back, it doesn’t mean love has ended and pain has begun. It means love is deepening. Not knowing that is ignorance. Not accepting that is pain. Wisdom is embracing it, this deepening of love, in all its infinite manifestations. That’s why the one who loves you back exists at all.
